One of the basic laws of physics applies to this map in particular - what goes up, must come down. Or in this case the reverse. It's always great fun making a charge from the hilltop start to the creek; then harsh reality soon sets in as yu begin that long slow grind to get back. Janet provided plenty of choices as to how to best do this, so we were able to distract ourselves from the physical pain, by putting our brains to work too.

The A course saw Ted, Matt and Warwick return fastest. Excitement on B course where Steven made good his promise to break Ian's winning streak; Brody took second and Ian was third after a decision to drop early controls backfired. Cormac, Daniel and Phil were fastest on C, while Ewen, me and Judi got back first on D. The highest scoring power walkers were Ros on 62 points, Geoff on 58 points, and Michael on 57 points.

In the past two weeks, Ted has extended his A course lead over Vic, while Phil is now third but only two points clear of Ron. Warwick has completed 8 events and could move into contention if he makes it to the last three scoring events. On B, Russell is now second behind Ian, and Ray is third, in a division that looks settled. Phil is now leading C course, Reg is second and Dennis third, with Judi only 3 points behind and Daniel still able to grab a placing if things go his way. D course is another one that looks set now with Ewen first, me second and Ruth third. Len is way out in front on PW, Rosie is second and Geoff third, with Angela only two points out of the placings. Ros is still the big danger and will grab second place after 2 more events.

Don't forget that next week is the final Champs qualifier, so places in the Final will be on the line at Edwardes Lake. Remember to use a Blue card if you are seeking a qualifying spot. See you there!

Northern Series

About this series:

Welcome to the Northern Series - Park and Street orienteering in Melbourne's north.

Where: Northern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Thursdays October-March

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In summer, there are 4 runners courses ranging from 3.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time). The Thursday series does not operate over winter, but there is a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday series to choose from.

Enquiries: Ewen Templeton, tel 9434 6071.
