Darebin Parklands

Sunday, 5 February 2017

Darebin Parklands is two very different maps - the streets in the west are long and flat, punctuated by the railway line to the south; while the park is quite steep with a creek traversing its length, with limited places to cross. You always have to plan carefully to avoid getting boxed into a corner.  I thought I would take the "smart" option and stay on the streets, thus avoiding abn\\ny contours whatsoever; but turns out using the park was a much shorter option, even with the hefty climbs involved.  Course setters Mason and Torren offered plenty of options and plenty of tricks.

Our overseas visitor Eran cleaned up A course, ahead of Ted, Warwick, Ron and Phil.  Fastest on B were Ian, Steven, Ray, Geoff and David.  C course was won by Brody, followed by Cormac, Daniel, Phil and Katherine.  Quickest on D were Ewen, Pete then me.  Len was way out in front on PW, with Rosie, Geoff and Claire all on the same points to claim the next three places.

Overall, Ted took the lead on A course by one point from Vic. Stephen is now third, but Phil and Ron will come into contention in the next couple of weeks.  No change for now on B for Ian, Ray and David. Reg regained top spot on C course ahead of Judi, with Dennis moving into third, but Phil is going to upset everyone after one more week. On D, I managed to climb back up to second behind Ewen and ahead of Ruth. On PW its still Len, Rosie and Angela out in front, but Geoff is only 3 points out of the placings, and Ros is in with a chance if she completes 11 events.

Next Thursday's event is at Warralong Heights, starting from Montmorency Park - venue for the first Park and Street Championships.  The Northern series qualifier is two weeks later, at Edwardes Lake, before the Final on Wednesday March 1.  Click here for all the Champs details.

Northern Series

About this series:

Welcome to the Northern Series - Park and Street orienteering in Melbourne's north.

Where: Northern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Thursdays October-March

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In summer, there are 4 runners courses ranging from 3.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time). The Thursday series does not operate over winter, but there is a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday series to choose from.
