Hilly Heidelberg

Friday, 15 September 2017

Hilly Heidelberg is a small pointy map, but the contours ensure that there is vertical distance to cover as well as horizontal.  A mixup with the print scale meant that courses were on the short side, making A course a 14-way race to get all 20 controls.  Thanks to Hamish's configuration, it wasnt quite so easy to execute, as the choices were many and varied.  Tim emerged the winner, ahead of Colin, Ian, Andrew and Geoff.  On B, Tim and Nick also got the lot, with Ian regretting an early decision to drop no 1.  Mark won PW with a big score of 66, one point clear of Dave and two points ahead of Len.

Overall, this week saw quite a lot of changes to the divisional placings.  With his win, Tim has climbed to first on A1, but only by a point to Ian; Steven is third with Paul 2 points behind. As expected, Andrew claimed first on A2, well in front of Rick and Martin, who are neck and neck in the battle for second.  Meanwhile Roger consolidated his lead on A3 over Ray and Stuart.  Peter now has some competition on A4, namely Kasia and Peter M.

On B1, Nick notched up his 8th event and in doing so, slotted in to second, 3 points behind leader Tim, and 5 points ahead of Ian.  I'm clinging to a slender lead on B2, just 2 points ahead of Jonathan, while Pete is 3 points clear of Greg for third.

Dave breathed a sigh of relief when Tony's absence meant he remains on top for now; Mark is 5 points behind in second, and Helen is still third. Barry has a big lead on PW2, but Lyn and MIchael moved into contention, and there's now a 4 way tussle for second and third.  No change on PW3 for Noel, Mike or Gwennyth; however on PW4, the Newburys moved up to third behind Suzanne and Keith.

See you next Wednesday at Cathies Corner in Wantirna - a personal favourite.

Eastern Series Information

About this series:

Where: Eastern suburbs of Melbourne

When: 7:00pm Wednesdays; all year round

Cost:  $5 per event for adults, $2 for juniors (under 21)

What to bring: jogging/walking shoes and comfortable, light coloured clothing.  Bring a watch, a drink, and a torch for winter events (late March-mid October).

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide time to help you register for the event and explain how to take part.

Groups (schools, scouts, sports or social) are extremely welcome, but please contact us at least a week prior to the event so we can ensure enough maps are printed.

In winter, there are 2 courses for runners.  These are Score format, where you visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time, with the aim of earning as many points as possible.  Times are 60 mins or 45 mins.  There is also a 60 min Score course for Power Walkers.

In summer, there are 5 runners courses ranging from 2.5-10 km, and a 60 minute power walkers' course.  For runners the format is Scatter (visit a designated number of controls in any order, first back wins), and for power walkers the format is Score format (visit as many controls as you can in the allocated time).
