Geelong Street-O  -  Stormy, Stormy Weather

The wet season tropics came to Geelong last Thursday threatening to put a damper on our 2nd event for the series.

Fortunately our Geelong participants are a hardy bunch, so a little rain didn't prevent a relatively strong turnout at Richmond Reserve, East Geelong.

Maybe it was enthusiasm for the ongoing MyOMaps experiment that drew the crowd ??

Certainly the map area is ideal for Street orienteering with a complex network of lanes and streets, multiple angled roadways and even a gravel road in what is one of the oldest suburbs of Geelong (maybe only the A grade runners would have found this road).

Again a majority of participants chose to use MyOMaps with the overwhelming response being extremely positive.

Again we had some issues. Analysis of these issues are largely down to many of us simply needing time to become more familiar with the system.

Bear with it, the rewards will come !!

3 basic rules to follow when using MyOMaps -

  a) make sure that your app has STARTED,
  b) make sure your app has FINISHED,
  c) make sure you have DOWNLOADED your results at the end.

For most of us following these instructions will deliver the outcome we want. For most of the rest, we have solutions !!
If you do have any specific scoring problems, speak to John and Heather.

Tony McR was first home in A grade, with the consistent Toby C next, followed by Ed S and Andrew T.

In B grade, Glenn M was the winner, ahead of Stuart McW and Alf B.

C grade saw Brad S continue on his winning ways with Mel B , Jenny C and Gary L next in line.

Peter B joined the MyOMaps party for his 1st time and also was 1st home in D grade, ahead of Chris P.

The usual tight tussle with the Walkers was turned upside down this week, with Ben K on 67 points a clear winner. Well done !!! Linelle K and Henk K (61 pts) ensured that the placings were kept in the family, with Lynda McM and Linden Y close on their heels (60 pts).
It was great to have regulars in Andrew T, Alf B, Kathy W (and friends) and Lorraine C back in action.

You may be wondering why we're trialling MyOMaps.

There are several advantages, some of which relate to participants and others to administration.

Ultimately we have the possibility of having immediate real time results on-line, plus no control plates to be placed out and collected. We're not there yet, but as they say in the (modern) classics - Winter is Coming !!

Our next event is on Thursday 23/11 at the Leisure Links Centre, Waurn Ponds. Don't be a wallflower - come and join the fun !!

Cheers,
Alan Cooke
