Barwon Heads Report Final for Surf Coast Series 23/01/2015

Friday, 29 January 2016

Starting from the new PlayPark in the BH Village Park the control descriptions printed on the preview map gave a strong clue to some of the control sites.
e.g. “Half way across” just had to refer to the pedestrian bridge over the Barwon.
“Bench at top of stairs” had to be the stairs leading to the top of The Bluff.
“Flood Marker Sign” is an old favorite control site.

On turning over the map there seemed to a large number of high point controls across the top of the map. Hmm. It might be a good idea to reverse past strategy and collect these controls first. (I didn’t . Big mistake!) And with the tide in the beach route along the River did not look attractive. With no controls along the 13th Beach or across the Bridge this year’s “all controls” route might have been a little shorter than in previous years.

In Run90 Steve, Toby, Helen and Josie all collected all controls.
Run60 was won by Scott from Andrew and Willem.
Glen managed one more control than Sofie in
Run50.
Andrew scored highest ahead of Shane, Tom and Kate in Run40/Bike90.
The reliable Michael took out
PW90 ahead of Jo who scored highly but incurred severe time penalties.
Greg scored highest in
PW60, ahead of 5 Kerstens.

Pre-run plotting the river beach run ... or not!!

Assembled for the Start

About the Summer Surf Coast Series

The Surf Coast series consists of four events each starting at 4PM on consecutive Saturday afternoons in January.

They are held at the historic and spectacular coastal towns mainly on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The maps are usually of regular Park Street format:
A4 size, Black & white, scale 1:10000 and usually 10 meter contours. We never said it was flat!

There are a choice of courses. Choose from 40, 50, 60 or 90 minutes for runners and 60 or 90 mminutes for power walkers.

New comers are always made welcome. Just turn up about 3.30 to register on the day and we will help you and explain the event. No previous experience or special equipment like a compass is required.

Courses are designed to accomodate people of all ages and abilities. The Power Walking courses also accomodates those people who would just like to stroll around and find a few control plates.

Detail of the upcoming summer events are available on this website by October so you have plenty of time to see which events will fit in.

Depending on the weather this can be a great opportunity to combine a swim and other activities on the day.

Weather conditions can vary enormously on the peninsula whichs adds to the fun and the drama. The 4pm start avoids the hottest part of the day and allows for a leaisurly drive to the events.
