Point Lonsdale Report 16/01/2016

Monday, 18 January 2016

It has been pleasing to see so many of the Geelong Series orienteers getting in some mid-season training before their season resumes at Torquay next Thursday evening.

Our start was in the scenic Gaines Reserve with its lawns and lake tucked away in the shelter of the sand dunes. Competitors had a choice of routes with controls close by in all directions. Those who chose control 30, one of the high score controls, were soon faced with a testing 25m climb up the soft sandy path to the crest of the primary dune before descending to the control on the surf beach. Other interesting sites were at the lighthouse , at old cannon sites, on the rocks at the base of stairs with waves threatening, and on bush tracks in the tea tree.

After the run at the popular refreshments table.

 -
The 90 Minute Walkers finishing right on time.

In the 90 minute Run class Ted and Hans both visited all controls with Ted returning first.
Of the 90 minute Walkers Michael scored highest from Jo who visited one more control but copped a late penalty.
The 60 minute Walk class was lead by Tim and Carl ahead of Nicole and Kye.
Andrew took out the 60 minute Run ahead of Ed and Scott.
The 50 minute Run was an all Geelong field with Joel prevailing over Sofie and Glen.

Many, many thanks to all who collect controls after each event.

Our next and final event for the series is at beautiful Barwon Heads.
The map stretches from the 13th Beach sand dunes and the grandeur of The Bluff north through Barwon  Heads with its myriad lane ways to the Start/Finish at the sports grounds, and the Barwon River . Recent  events have taken us across the Barwon Heads pedestrian bridge. Not to be missed!!

About the Summer Surf Coast Series

The Surf Coast series consists of four events each starting at 4PM on consecutive Saturday afternoons in January.

They are held at the historic and spectacular coastal towns mainly on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The maps are usually of regular Park Street format:
A4 size, Black & white, scale 1:10000 and usually 10 meter contours. We never said it was flat!

There are a choice of courses. Choose from 40, 50, 60 or 90 minutes for runners and 60 or 90 mminutes for power walkers.

New comers are always made welcome. Just turn up about 3.30 to register on the day and we will help you and explain the event. No previous experience or special equipment like a compass is required.

Courses are designed to accomodate people of all ages and abilities. The Power Walking courses also accomodates those people who would just like to stroll around and find a few control plates.

Detail of the upcoming summer events are available on this website by October so you have plenty of time to see which events will fit in.

Depending on the weather this can be a great opportunity to combine a swim and other activities on the day.

Weather conditions can vary enormously on the peninsula whichs adds to the fun and the drama. The 4pm start avoids the hottest part of the day and allows for a leaisurly drive to the events.
