Park and Street Orienteering

More Fun Than the Same Old Run

Bored with running the same old block? Tired of trudging on the treadmill? Looking for a new way to give your brain and body a boost? Want to see new places and meet new faces?

Park and Street Orienteering provides the perfect combination of mental and physical exercise. You do not need a compass or any special map reading ability. However, it will test your thinking while giving you a great workout in a friendly, safe, outdoor environment.   Events are held all over Melbourne, all year round.

Our events welcome people of all ages and abilities, and accommodate everyone from the elite sports person to those looking for a good walk to help stay in shape.

Families and friends can participate in groups or individually.  Groups such as schools, scouts, sports or social clubs are very welcome - but please contact us at least a week prior to the event, so we can make sure enough maps are printed.

Printed programs covering all of Melbourne are available at most events. Further information is also available on this website: Want to learn more? Click here

Chief Eskimos of the Iceberg Series: Ackerly, Goddard, Dodd and Budge

Thursday, 19 August 2010

Presentations for the 2010 Iceberg Night series were held on a suitably very chilly night after the first Spring series event in Rosanna on Wednesday night.

The prizes for our best brass monkeys went as follows:

Course A: Bryan Ackerly had 6 wins over the 10 event series to get the maximum 600 points, with Andrew Baker 2nd and Tony Bird pipping Ian Davies for 3rd. Other A course winners were Colin Pearce (A2), Ian Greenwood (A3) and Dale Howe (A4), hopefully on the mend from her broken wrist.

Mark Jarvis - 2nd in A3
Mark Jarvis - 2nd in A3, one point behind Ian Greenwood.

Course B: After a ding-dong battle Jamie Goddard (with 5 wins and 599 points) just topped Bruce Paterson (4 wins and 597 points), with Kristian Ruuska close behind in 3rd. Also victorious were David Prentice (B2) and Robyn Hall (B3). Jamie is making the move to the A course for the Spring series, which will make things extra interesting there. (He had a good run to finish 4th in A on Wednesday night.)

Course C: Ian Dodd had a solid win that included 5 first places, with Stephen Brown 2nd and Clifford Heath 3rd. Other celebrating C coursers were Peter Yeates (C2) and Debbie Dodd (C3).

Power Walking: Len Budge led in the big Power Walking field, receiving maximum points from his 6 wins, with Greg Cavill his closest rival (596 points) and Barry Giles nosing out Ron Frederick for 3rd. Other walking winners were Bernie Shuttleworth (PW2), Peter Mummery (PW3) and Keith Anker (PW4).

Congratulations to ALL!! Good luck to everyone in the Spring series.

Some quick notes on our last couple of events...

Blackburn North - Wednesday 11 August

Despite a very scarey forecast of strong winds and rain, 67 brave souls turned out for the last event of the Iceberg series. We were actually lucky enough to score a bit of a break in the weather, with only steady drizzle prevailing for period of the event. There weren't as many pulped control cards as the week before!

Andrew Baker had his first win of the series on the A course. Your roving reporter can confirm seeing series winner Bryan Ackerly turn one street too early for control 18 after coming out of control 6, which may have helped open the door for Andrew.

Jamie Goddard had a good win on B course to help secure his series victory, while Clifford Heath had his first C course win of the series. beating in his main protagonists (Stephen Brown and Ian Dodd), who both finished a minute late.

Len Budge took out a closely fought Power Walking event.

The consensus among some long course runners was that those who grabbed control 7 first (in the middle of the course) made the right move. (See map below.)

Hilly Heidelberg - 18 August 2010

It might have been the first event of the Spring series, but it sure felt a lot like winter!! At least it was the first Wednesday Street-O event without rain for a few weeks.

Greg Andrews used the contours to advantage to set a challenging course that had many of us wondering just how many hills are there in Heidelberg!

Course winners were Colin Pearce (A), Bruce Paterson (B), Ian Dodd (C) and Ron Frederick (PW), with Colin and Ron taking good advantage of the absence of some fancied competitors.
