The 2009 season of the SILVA National League opened on Saturday in the Adelaide suburb of Wynn Vale. The race was a sprint event which required a switch from high speed running to technical nous. It produced some tight racing, especially mid-field.  Victoria's Jasmine Neve flew out of the start to taken the opening split then settled into her race and was good enough to take second only one second, behind Hanny Allston, with Kathryn Ewels third.  Ainslinn Prendergast was the quickest junior girl and ninth fastest overall.  Injured veteran Bruce Arthur was the best of the men in a surprising 5th place.

The second race of the SILVA National League began only hours after the first finished -- a chasing-start middle distance through the Para Wirra Recreation Park. Julian Dent and Hanny Allston both carried healthy leads from the morning's race, and both posted the quickest times to take easy back-to-back victories.  The women's race showed the strength of the Victorian Nuggets, with Jasmine Neve repeating her second placing from this morning, while Kathryn Ewels posted a strong time to take third place. Aislinn Prendergast showed her morning win was no accident to take her second victory of the day in Junior Girls.  Leon Keely's speed did the job for him in Junior Men, narrowly defeating the morning's winner, Lachlan Dow.  Brother Bryan Keely was the best of the senior men in a strong fourth place.

Christopher Naunton leads the pack at Narrinyerri Hills

The first round of this year's SILVA National League finished with a mass start, Hagaby style course. The looping and splits promised to provide some great action for both competitors and spectators. Junior men ran the same course as the Seniors today -- meaning a long day out in the field for many aspiring JWOC-ers. This didn't phase Leon Keely, who placed 4th overall and first junior.
For the women, second place in the women's came down to sprint finish between Kathryn Ewels, Jasmine Neve and the evergreen Shannon Jones. Ewels took the honours, just managing to hold off Jasmine Neve with Jones only three seconds further back for fourth.

So after 3 races, Victoria leads the Open Women teams competition on 22, ahead of Canberra Cockatoos 21 and Tassie Foresters 17.  Our men are also doing better than expected in third place behind the strong NSW Stingers and Southern Arrows teams.  The junior men and junior women's teams are also each doing well in third place.

History of the Victoria Nuggets

Victoria Nuggets dominate 2007 National Orienteering League

2007 Victoria Nuggets Report

Final 2007 standings in the Senior and Junior divisions are now available.

The Victorian Nuggets have won three of the four divisions of the 2007 National Orienteering League.

This is Victoria's second ever National Orienteering League win, after taking out the overall champion team title for the first time in 2003.

Without any superstars, the Nuggets depth and consistency over the 15 rounds proved too good for other states to match.

The Nuggets won the Senior Men’s National League with 127 points from the NSW Stingers on 122,

the Senior Women’s with 129 points from the Southern Arrows on 108, and the Junior Men’s with 81 from the Tassie Foresters on 71.  The Queensland Cyclones won the Junior Women’s title with 81 points from the Victorian Nuggets 62.

Reigning champions, and twelve time winners, the Canberra Cockatoos, finished last in both senior divisions.
