Victoria Nuggets star in Tasmanian newspapers
It was no coincidence that the 3 feature orienteering photographs in the Tasmanian Examiner on the weekend were of Victoria Nuggets orienteers. Leon Keely, Todd Neve and Clare Brownridge all featured in half page full colour photos. The fantastic new uniform tops in a modern design with sponsor logos helped the Nuggets to some good results, and were obviously also a favourite with the newspaper sports editor.
Junior World Championships Team
As always, Day 3 of Easter belongs to the juniors, with the naming of the Australian team to compete in Italy in July. Victorians Max Neve and Leon Keely tied for 1st on the day to earn their selection in the national junior team. A consistent Easter was also enough for Aislinn Prendergast to make the team once again.
The JWOC team is:
Josh Blatchford Lachlan Dow Callum Fagg Leon Keely (VIC) Max Neve (VIC) Oscar Phillips |
Bridget Anderson Sarah Buckerfield Lilian Burrill Belinda Lawford Krystal Neumann Aislinn Prendergast (VIC)
|

Reserves are Kurt Neumann, James Robertson (VIC), Catherine Hewitt and Brea Pearce.
Easter Results
Kathryn Ewels wins the Elite Prologue
Day 3 of Easter concluded today with Julian Dent and Hanny Allston going through the formalities to win the elite classes. Allston dominated the race to beat Victorian Kathryn Ewels (CH) in 2nd. Jasmine Neve (MF) came 2nd on the day -- not enough to overtake Ewels but sufficient to hold on to 3rd place in front of her elder sister Mace. Meanwhile, Dent tore around a tough course in under 5 min/km (in terrain where such speed should not be possible). The result was a deserved victory over Simon Uppill, with veteran Grant Bluett in 3rd.
In other classes, Ted van Geldermalsen (YV) was a convincing winner in M55A with Roch Prendergast (EU) winning day 3 and finishing 3rd overall. Tim Dent was 2nd in M65A, while Alex Tarr would have won if here were not unofficial (as mapper of Day 3). Tom Norwood was 2nd in M80.
Former EU member Jenny Bourne won W55A by 24 minutes, but Sue Key (MF) was best of the rest. YV pair Ruth Goddard and Kathy Liley had a tight battle for 3rd and 4th in W60A. Dale Ann Gordon (EU) and Janet Tarr (YV) were 2nd and 3rd in W65A. Helen Alexander (BK) had a big win in W70 with Janet Fitzwater (NE) 3rd.
Full results now available.
SILVA National Orienteering League
The Silva National Orienteering League is shaping up to be an exciting contest. In particular, the women's competition is a close battle between the Canberra Cockatoos (currently on 51 points) and the Victorian Nuggets (50). Tasmania is in 3rd place 10 points adrift. In the men's competition the Canberra Cockatoos made up some ground this weekend, but are still 33 points behind the NSW Stingers (63 points). Southern Arrows are still in the hunt on 42 points, while Victoria is 3rd.
