This combination of The Amazing Race and Street Orienteering was run on Saturday from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Designed as lots of fun for both families and the keener orienteer or runner, it required cryptic clue analysis, simple street map reading, puzzle solving, physical and mental challenges plus a little bit of luck. As usual, it was a great way for teams of 2,3 or 4 to get a bit of exercise and raise funds for local charities. This year the challenges included 10-pin bowling, dressing up in opera costumes, throwing tennis balls and using gym exercise equipment - each team had to row, run and cycle a set distance with team members taking turns to complete the required distances as fast as possible. Along the way we had to collect business cards from 8 different Ballarat Estate Agents - a challenge best done before noon when many offices shut!
Undoubtedly the highlight this year was the challenge to learn a short pole-dancing routine - yes, we said pole dancing! A certain un-named OV Board member was seen performing this challenge with surprising skill. (Hint: the President and VP Craig F. were in Canberra at the annual OA conference and it wasn't the Treasurer or the ex-Prez). All teams enjoyed the event with a growing number of local, non-orienteers, stepping up for the challenge. Well done to Mark Valentine for creating a unique event. We'll be back again next year to see what Mark and his team can come up with!
