Welcome to the first’ press release’ for the exciting  Linking project: a joint venture between Gilson College and Orienteering Victoria. This project is being funded through a VicHealth grant over a period of 4 years, starting NOW! Each week there will be updated orienteering information.  SO WATCH THIS SPACE!

 

The aim of the project is to promote and encourage you – the students, staff and parents, who are the Gilson Community, to become active in Orienteering.

 

Orienteering is a sport and recreation involving reading a map and navigating through a series of ‘controls’. It is a wonderful way to keep fit, meet people and acquire new skills.

 

This LINKING  project focuses on ‘Park and Street Orienteering’ events based in the western suburbs of Melbourne. These take place on a Tuesday night, starting at 7pm and go for one hour.

 

Starting this week and continuing until well into 2011 there will be many opportunities:

  • to come and try orienteering – you can walk, or jog or run – in a group or by yourself.
  • to help at events with assisting with registration / results
  • to acquire new skills and meet loads of people.

 

As you become familiar with the sport and learn the basic skills there will be the opportunity to become more involved – to learn how to set courses, to draw orienteering maps (computer aided), to help organise events.

 

By the fourth year, the aim is for an ‘official’ event to be run from Gilson College, on a map made by Gilson College community members with courses set by yourselves!

 

I’ll meet many of you on Wednesday 6th February at the General Information evening, and

also the Year 9 parents and students on Wednesday 13th February at their ‘Learning for Life’ information evening. I’ll be bringing handouts and more details. Come and talk!
