Geelong Thu 3 Dec09
Despite threatening weather, 46 participants set off in the Highton King of the Mountains in round 4 of Geelong Street O. It was great to see some competitors come down from Melbourne for the event but the weather and the hilly course seemed to keep the power walkers away.
The event was on a new map that included the hill climb from next years World Road Cycling Championships. The map contained 10 metres contours and from the river to the lookout on Montpelier it was a rise of about 70 metres.
Competitors said the course was challenging but they enjoyed the variation from the normally flatter Street O events.
Bryan Ackerley won A grade from consistent Geelong winner Luke Haines followed by Ted Van Geldermeistern. First female was Sofie Van Gunsteren.
B Grade was won by newcomer Chris Melville from Kate Gavens and Tom Lothian.
In C Grade, Tim Anderson returned to the winners position turning the tables on Nathan McKenzie. First female was Jean O/Neill.
Mick Mutton continued his dominance of D Grade and was followed in by John Sheahan and Heather Leslie.
Tania Elderkin won power walkers on time from Sarah Murray with Helen Alexander and Kerry Thomson both one point behind. First male was Kevin Maloney.
The male and female winners in all sections received a red polka dot cup and two additional spot prizes were given out to power walkers.
Next week commences at Oberon High School and the event is largely in and around the Waurn Ponds Valley.
