Nuggets News - 2009/1
Tuesday, 20 January 2009
Welcome to the 2009 Orienteering season. This promises to be an exciting year for the team as we look to regain some of the 4 national league titles.
Squad Training
2 training camps before this year's NOL competition will be held on:
Feb 21/22 Castlemaine (Bendigo ToDay)
Mar 7-9 Daylesford
There is also a National Squad Camp and Races at the Stromlo Running Festival from Feb 27-29.
Please keep these dates free.
Other organised squad training will be held regularly in each of Melbourne, Bendigo and Ballarat. See the schedule Nuggets Plan 2009.xls, or contact Bruce, Jim or Roch to join in.
Southern Cross Series
The Southern Cross Series will be conducted in the first half of 2009 to encourage elite competition in our state based events. Nuggets will compete for either Vic Metro or Vic Country, while outsiders will be able to compete for the Interstate Raiders. I will coordinate the series this year, but I am looking for volunteers to be captains for each team by Jan 31. The first race is on Feb 21 and there will be a dozen or so races through to June. Further details here Southern Cross Series.ppt.
Uniforms
Simon has helped to design some new cool, modern uniform tops from JaxSport. These will be ready for the SA NOL races in March. It will be mandatory for all senior and junior team members to wear uniforms this year, otherwise the team loses points. Please set aside around $70 for a super fast new top. We hope to be able to subsidise some of this. There are no new pants this time, but I still have stock of navy o-pants if you need them. - Victorian Government funding through Sport & Recreation Victoria (VicHealth, SunSmart, SmokeFree)
- Orienteering Victoria
- Australian Sports Commission (Ausport)
- SILVA
We also have sponsorship arrangements for discounted products from
- Melbourne Bicycle Center
- High5 Sports Nutrition
If you would like to purchase discounted High5 products, please review the high5 price list 2008.xls and let me know your order by Jan 31. I will request the discounted products and distribute them at the training camps.
Coaching
If you want to improve your orienteering, why not become a registered coach. Peta Whitford is running a session on Feb 7 (see the December Ovic). Register to Peta by Friday 30th at the very latest ( we have to order manuals etc and need a good lead in time).
2010 NOL
Orienteering Victoria plans to bid for a NOL weekend in 2010, possibly on the June or March long weekends. The bid needs to be developed over the next month. Please ask your club to consider if they want to be involved. Let Bruce and Blair know if you have ideas for areas/event formats.

History of the Victoria Nuggets
Victoria Nuggets dominate 2007 National Orienteering League
2007 Victoria Nuggets Report
Final 2007 standings in the Senior and Junior divisions are now available.
The Victorian Nuggets have won three of the four divisions of the 2007 National Orienteering League.
This is Victoria's second ever National Orienteering League win, after taking out the overall champion team title for the first time in 2003.
Without any superstars, the Nuggets depth and consistency over the 15 rounds proved too good for other states to match.
The Nuggets won the Senior Men’s National League with 127 points from the NSW Stingers on 122,
the Senior Women’s with 129 points from the Southern Arrows on 108, and the Junior Men’s with 81 from the Tassie Foresters on 71. The Queensland Cyclones won the Junior Women’s title with 81 points from the Victorian Nuggets 62.
Reigning champions, and twelve time winners, the Canberra Cockatoos, finished last in both senior divisions.
Nuggets Numbers
Upon scoring their first NOL point, team members are allocated a Nuggets number. Natasha Key scored the first number in 1994, and Julie Lawford is latest addition at #56. Nuggets members are now recognised for significant milestones for NOL races and points accumulated.
